Steven Berry founded Bear Valley Design in 2005 after relocating to Big Bear Lake. Steve brings over twenty years of experience in the design and construction of many different project types to the Big Bear Valley. Most notable is his experience in the design and construction of zoological facilities, from progressive mixed species exhibits, restaurants/food service facilities, and gift shops, to off exhibit holding and breeding facilities for many of the world’s endangered species.

Beginning with Polar Bear Plunge in 1995, and most recently the completion of Monkey Trails and Forest Tales in 2005, Steve has had the great fortune to participate in many of the larger projects that the Zoological Society of San Diego has undertaken at both the world famous San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park. Working closely with all levels of staff including Directors, Curators, Animal Care personnel as well as the Construction and Maintenance, Food Service and Merchandise departments has been key to the success of these complex projects.

Steve has extensive experience in project types from concrete tilt-up office/ manufacturing such as Denso, to multi-family residential such as Gaslamp CitySquare and Classic Residence by Hyatt. He has also completed several healthcare related projects for Kaiser Permanente from a state of the art mammography suite to an off-site central supply warehouse and satellite pharmacy.

The best projects are the result of true collaboration between client and architect. In successful projects, design issues must be balanced with pragmatic concerns and constraints accepted as opportunities.
